Listen to Band of Horses on iHeartRadio

Band of Horses frontman Ben Bridwell is riding out on his own for a bit.  He's set to kick off a short solo tour this weekend, playing reworked Band of Horses songs along with a few new tracks he recorded under the name Birdsmell.

Bridwell isn't offering an explanation for the new stage name, but he did explain in a post on the band's website that the solo project dates back to 2008.  He says it began when he recorded a cover version of a George Harrison song with some buddies.

He invited them back a few years later to work on some original material, and has now decided to unleash the songs online.  Bridwell says these recordings were just about having fun, but that doesn't mean he won't take his upcoming live gigs seriously.

The eight-stop trek is scheduled to start Saturday in Carrboro, North Carolina.

Bridwell hasn't mentioned any plans to put out a full-fledged solo album, but "Rolling Stone" says the new Birdsmell songs will be available on seven-inch vinyl exclusively at his live shows.
