Telescope Aimed At Interstellar Object

An initiative that searches the heavens for signs of extraterrestrial life will aim a telescope today at an interstellar visitor.  An odd chunk of rock or possibly metal is the first confirmed object from outside the solar system, having recently dipped inside Mercury's orbit before the sun's gravity slingshotted it out toward the edge of the system.

Named 'Oumuamua, Hawaiian for "first messenger," the 800-meter-long cigar-shaped object is currently halfway to Jupiter.
