Suspect Arrested in Shooting at Los Angeles Middle School

A 12-year-old girl has been taken into custody after a shooting at a middle school, left five people injured at a school west of downtown Los Angeles police say. 

Reports of gunfire came in shortly before 9 a.m. Thursday morning in the 1500 block of West Second Street according to Officer Drake Madison of the Los Angeles Police Department. 

Two students were shot and three others were injured by shrapnel during a shooting at Salvador Castro Middle School in the Westlake District. The two students who were shot, a 15-year-old boy and a 15-year-old girl have been transported to a local hospital. The boy is reportedly in stable, but critical condition after being shot in the head, and the girl is in fair condition according to the Los Angeles Fire Department. The condition of the other victims was unknown at this time. 

"It's still to early in the investigation to determine a motive, what precipitated this," the LA School police chief said. 

Students have also been seen slowly coming out of classrooms while police search them for weapons before being released. The L.A. School Police Chief says the school day will continue at Sal Castro Middle School and that parents can pick up their children at any time. Counselors will be present in the classroom for students for the next few days.
