Stimulus Check Still Very Possible Even With Relief Talks Called Off

It was a busy day for President Trump on Tuesday. He told his representatives to "stop negotiating" on another coronavirus relief package "until after the election," adding that at that point, "We will pass a major Stimulus Bill that focuses on hardworking Americans and Small Business." In doing so, he burst what little hope millions of people had for getting a second stimulus check soon. He also angered Republicans and Democrats alike, who denounced the decision and urged him to return to the negotiating table. Plus he caused the stock market to take a dive.

Well hours later, Trump seemed to change his tune a bit. He tweeted, "If I am sent a Stand Alone Bill for Stimulus Checks ($1,200), they will go out to our great people IMMEDIATELY. I am ready to sign right now. Are you listening Nancy?" He tagged Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, as well as other Congressional leaders.

It's not too surprising that Trump would like to see a stimulus check to go out - the election is just four weeks away and according to a New York Times/Siena College poll, 72% of voters favor a relief package that offers stimulus checks, unemployment insurance, and support to local and state governments.

Pelosi and Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin seemed to be making headway on a potential package and were set to continue their talks when Trump called them off. There is no word yet on if Congress will forge ahead with a standalone bill, but if they do, a stimulus check could be in your mailbox just days after the bill is written up.
