CA May Become The 1st State To Force High Schools to Start At 8:30am

The argument is that school starts to early and California lawmakers want to change that.

From the San Francisco Chronicle

High schools could start no earlier than 8:30 a.m. and middle schools no sooner than 8 a.m. if the Legislature gets its way.

SB328,by Sen. Anthony Portatino, D-La Cañada Flintridge (Los Angeles County), would require most secondary schools in the state to adopt the new schedule by July 1, 2022, though rural districts would be exempted.

Despite the late hour, lawmakers engaged in a lengthy and passionate debate about the policy in the Assembly, where the bill passed 44-17 well after midnight, sending it to Gov. Gavin Newsom. He has not said whether he will sign it.
