6.4 Earthquake Shakes Southland on Fourth of July

Seismometer printing details

Those celebrating the Fourth of July were surprised when a earthquake shook things up. The quake, which began at about 10:33 a.m. had a 6.4 magnitude and mostly was centered in the San Bernardino and Kern County area. About 10 miles from Ridgecrest was the focal point.

Los Angeles Fire Department authorities report that ``all 106 fire stations are out conducting a strategic survey of their districts to determine if any damage exists. Once this process is complete, an overall assessment of the impact in the City of Los Angeles will be compiled.''

Residents are urged not to contact 911 unless there are reports of injuries or any other damage.

No damages or injuries have been immediately reported. San Bernardino County Fire Department tweeted out that they are currently conducting an assessment.

``No injuries reported, however buildings and roads have sustained varying degrees of damage.''

According to seismologist Lucy Jones, founder of the Dr. Lucy Jones Center for Science & Society, the quake is not on the San Andreas fault.

``It is an area with a lot of little faults but no long fault,'' she tweeted.

She adds that, today's quake is the strongest felt in the Southland since 1999.
