The National Weather Service (NWS) is investigating reports of a possible tornado in Pico Rivera, Los Angeles County, after a resident reported significant damage early Thursday morning. A resident on the 9500 block of Glencannon Drive contacted KTLA, stating that a tornado struck around 3:15 a.m., uprooting large pine trees, damaging cars, and causing downed power lines and a water main break.
The NWS has not yet confirmed whether a tornado caused the damage, but a storm survey team is on the way to assess the situation. According to KTLA Meteorologist Henry DiCarlo, the team will examine the damage path to determine if it was caused by a tornado or a downburst.
This investigation comes amid a powerful storm hitting Southern California, bringing heavy rain and gusty winds. The storm, fueled by an atmospheric river, is expected to deliver up to four inches of rain in some areas, raising concerns about flash flooding and debris flows. The Los Angeles Times reported that evacuation warnings have been issued for several communities in Los Angeles County, particularly those near recent burn scars.
Meteorologist Maria Quiban from FOX 11 highlighted the potential for rare weather events, including thunderstorms, small hail, and weak tornadoes, as the storm progresses. The NWS continues to monitor the situation, and residents are advised to stay vigilant and heed evacuation warnings.
