When Kendrick Lamar surprise-released his new album GNX on November 22 it excited a lot of people, but one person who was less than thrilled was Father John Misty. The singer-songwriter dropped his sixth studio album Mahashmashana on the same day. When GNX hit streaming services, FJM took to X to address the unfortunate (for him) situation, writing: "not now I’m furiously scribbling my seeming response to"

"i’m so sorry that you happened to drop on the worst possible day to drop a new album" a fan replied.

The singer-songwriter then pointed out that this isn't the first time he and the hip hop heavyweight put out albums in the same year. "it’s okay only other times it’s happened was 2012, 2015, 2017 and 2022" (Consequence then noted that Lamar's Black Panther soundtrack and FJM's God's Favorite Customer also both came out in 2018).

The indie folk musician has always had a sort of tongue-in-cheek, self-deprecating kind of sense of humor, and he let that shine in another post, writing: "hm how do I tell em my albums don’t chart," jokingly referring to the thought that Lamar's team purposely released the album on the same day to stop FJM from hitting No. 1.
