REDONDO BEACH (CNS) - A man was killed and a woman sustained minor injuries in a fiery car crash in Redondo Beach when the vehicle they were traveling in struck a light pole, authorities said Thursday.

The single-vehicle crash was reported at 11:17 p.m. Wednesday at the intersection of Palos Verdes Boulevard and South Catalina Avenue. After striking the pole, the vehicle caught fire and Redondo Beach Fire Department personnel responded to the scene to extinguish the fire, said Redondo Beach Police Lt. Mark Valdivia.

The unidentified man driving the vehicle was pronounced dead at the scene and the woman -- who was a passenger in the vehicle -- was taken to a hospital for treatment of her injuries.

A freelance videographer from online firm OnScene.TV reported that the driver was ejected from the car and decapitated.

The name of the driver is pending investigation by the Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner and notification of next of kin, police said.

The Redondo Beach Police Department is investigating the factors that contributed to the collision and anyone who may have witnessed the collision or has information regarding it was asked to contact Investigator Bijan Pirsaheli at 310-697-3862 or via email at Bijan.Pirsaheli@redondo.org.
