The fan deserved it. Watch the show - not your phone...etc
But you'll never convince me that this anything but a grumpy old man being an a#*hole to someone who paid money to see him perform. If you don't want people to use their phones at your show, ask them not to bring them (like Jack White) - or have security ask him to put his phone away.
Don't kick it out of his hand from stage.
Halford released a statement saying:

And there were reports that Halford was frustrated because the guy had been filming for a long time -
