A monstrous 400-pound bear wandered into a Los Angeles suburb Friday, causing people to leave their homes -- not to run to safety, but to take pictures of the menacing creature.
The incident happened in the LA suburb of Monrovia. Whereas the sight of such a large animal once struck fear into people's hearts, California Department of Fish and Wildlife officials arrived to find a paparazzi-like scene as dozens of people swarmed around the confused animal, risking their lives to snap photos of it.
"It’s a little alarming how close and comfortable people were getting up next to this bear," Fish and Wildlife spokesman Tim Daly says. "But there were no incidents, so we’re happy about that."
The bear was tranquilized and taken to a nearby forest habitat, Daly says.
