GARDENA (CNS) - Authorities Monday were investigating a fatal collision in Gardena that took a woman's life.

Gardena Police Department officers responded about 4 a.m. to a traffic collision involving a pedestrian and a vehicle at the intersection of Vermont Avenue and El Segundo Boulevard.

Officers found the female pedestrian on the roadway. She was rushed to a hospital, where she received treatment but was pronounced dead.

Information on her identity was not immediately available.

Police said a preliminary investigation revealed a female driver was traveling south on Vermont passing the intersection when she struck the pedestrian, who was on Vermont. The motorist remained on the scene and waited for police and fire department personnel to arrive.

The fatal collision was one of two reported on Sunday in Gardena.

In the other crash, which was a hit-and-run, a 5-year-old boy was killed in a crosswalk where he'd been walking with his grandmother about 10:30 a.m. at Marine and Budlong avenues.

The boy, Patrick Chacon of Gardena, died at the scene, according to the Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner. The grandmother was taken to a hospital in unknown condition. The driver then fled the scene.

Anyone who witnessed either collision was asked to call Investigator Jose Zamudio at 310-217-6189 or Sgt. Daniel Guzzo at 310-217-6122.
